Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, 27, was found dead in his room at the Texas hotel where the team was staying; the medical examiner discovered that Skaggs had a toxic mixture of alcohol and the painkillers fentanyl and oxycodone in his body.

Ten years ago: Syria’s main opposition groups rejected a new international plan that called for a transitional government because the compromise deal did not bar President Bashar Assad from taking part. Mexican voters brought the Institutional Revolutionary Party back to power. Tiger Woods won the AT&T National at Congressional in Bethesda, Maryland, closing with a 2-under 69 for the 74th victory of his career.

Five years ago: Pope Francis refused to renew the term of German Cardinal Gerhard Mueller as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican office that handles sexual abuse cases. (During Mueller’s five-year tenure, the congregation racked up a backlog of 2,000 cases and faced harsh criticism from abuse survivors.)

A year ago: The Supreme Court’s conservative majority rolled back a landmark voting rights law, in a ruling that could help Republican states fight voting restrictions put in place since the 2020 election. Donald Trump’s company and its longtime chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, have been charged in New York in what prosecutors have called a “radical and audacious” tax evasion scheme in which senior executives allegedly failed to report a compensation, including free use of apartments and cars. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has nominated Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, Trump’s most adamant GOP critic, to serve on a new select committee investigating the violent Jan. 6 insurrection on Capitol Hill.
